Join campaign to improve animal welfare in Lambeth

Lambeth Labour Councillors Imogen Walker and David Malone have been working on the issue of animal welfare in Lambeth. They have set up a petition for Lambeth residents to sign, and which will be presented to Cllr Christopher Wellbelove, the ever smiling next Mayor of Lambeth.

The petition reads as follows:

ANIMAL WELFARE CHARTER

We the undersigned petition the Mayor of Lambeth to request that Lambeth Council implements an Animal Welfare Charter immediately for the benefit of animals within the Borough of Lambeth. The Charter will provide an example to other agencies and individuals to prevent the unnecessary suffering of animals and reflect the concerns of community groups and local people who care about animal welfare and any cruel treatment, abuse or neglect of animals. In drafting and implementing the Charter we implore the Council to work closely with it partners including, the Metropolitan Police Service, the RSPCA, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs or any other relevant Government body. We note that the RSPCA has a new scheme that encourages local authorities to improve their service and to be recognised nationally for their contributions to animal welfare namely, the Community Animal Welfare Footprints scheme. We encourage Lambeth Council to engage with this scheme and in particular with regards to the problem of stray dogs and cats.

Instead of wasting taxpayers money on useless scrabbling after RSPCA awards, why doesn't the council do something that will actually help animals and their owners?

Try supporting the SHG's calls for an animal NHS. That would do more for animals than anything suggested by the council so far.

Or try establishing a working relationship with the Cinnamon Trust who care for elderly and sick people AND their pets.

If Lambeth makes a small number of changes, the RSPCA will help with funding and services, such as microchipping pets. The more pets that are microchipped and registered, the easier it will be to help with strays and stolen animals.

There are a small but significant number of dogs in Lambeth being used to fight other dogs or intimidate people, and by being supportive to responsible pet owners the council will be better equipped to deal with those who abuse animals in this way. Far from being a waste of money, this will potentially save money for Lambeth and improve the quality of life for animals and people.

I applaud your actions. What a pity your appalling MP in Vauxhall is the head of a bloodsports organisation that chases wild animals to exhaustion before ripping them apart with packs of dogs...
