Lambeth to benefit from £3.82 million extra youth funding
The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone and Minister for Children, Beverley Hughes MP, last week announced a £3.82 million funding package for young people in Lambeth. This is the fourth highest allocation in London, recognising the special need for youth services in our borough.
Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone said: “This £3.8 million funding will provide real alternatives to life on the streets, giving young Londoners in Lambeth more places to go and things to do.
It will begin to reverse the decline of facilities for young people in the capital, and it's vital that every young Londoner is given the chance to fulfill their potential and this investment will give children and teenagers from London’s poorest estates and communities right across the capital opportunities to learn new skills through training, sports and cultural activities.”
I very much hope that our local youth projects are able to access this money - and will post details of how to apply as soon as they are released.

Educational bursaries for young Lambeth residents
Larkhall residents may be interested in these two bursaries available to young Lambeth residents from low-income families. They are both administered by Lambeth Endowed Charities. Please encourage any suitable candidates to apply!
1. Student Grants for the second part of the 2007/2008 academic year
These grants are for low-income Lambeth residents under age 30 to assist with the costs of post-secondary education, whether academic or vocational, that has a strong likelihood of leading to work.
Allowed costs include: course fees; associated travel costs; books; special clothing; equipment; study/field trips
2. Walcot & St Thomas’ Bursary
These grants are for low-income Lambeth residents under age 30 who demonstrate exceptional promise and possess special talents and/or have special needs or are overcoming difficult circumstances. The Bursary aims to help financially disadvantaged Lambeth young people pursue leisure time activities in which they have a particular talent or which would provide a particular benefit.
Grants awarded under this programme have included: support for involvement in music, the arts or sport; musical instruments; course fees; competition expenses; special clothing; extra-curricular study; educational travel; ICT equipment - but new and creative ideas are most welcome.
Both of these grants are, typically, under £1000 for each academic year but some are more. Award amounts very much depend on the financial circumstances of the applicant and the requirements of the course. A financial assessment is carried out. Recipients or their families are in receipt of means-tested benefits, earning very low wages or without access to state benefits.
An interview (either in person or by telephone) is required. To download an application form please visit www.walcotfoundation.org.uk To discuss a potential application or ask any questions please e-mail grants@walcotfoundation.org.uk or telephone the Grants Manager on 020 7735 1925

Clapham Pool Will Be Closed This Weekend
Unfortunately Clapham Lesiure Centre Pool will again be closed this weekend.
I have been informed that , after inspections carried out today, the gas has again been shut off again after new leaks were discovered.
Contractors are looking to repair the leaks today (Friday), and will be turning the gas back on. However, as reported before, it normally takes around 2 days to bring the pool up to a safe temperature. It is therefore estimated that the pools will now be open to the public on Monday 10th December at the earliest.
